Chapter 1: Are You Pregnant?

Chapter 1: Are You Pregnant? (Aria's POV) I fidgeted in the stark white waiting area of Silvercrest Hospital, my fingers absently scrolling through my phone to distract myself. The sterile smell of disinfectant filled my nostrils as I waited for Dr. Mills to return with my test results. Three missed calls from my mother. I'd call her back soon. My thumb froze mid-scroll as Claire Watson's newest social media post appeared on my feed. She was my mate's Alpha Alexander's childhood sweetheart. My stomach tightened as I read her caption: "Officially dissolving the mate bond with Beta David. Time for new beginnings! #FreshStart #MovingOn" The glossy photo showed her looking somber yet beautiful, as always. Comments flooded in with sympathy and support. Everyone loved Claire. "Mrs. Summers?" Dr. Sarah Mills appeared in the doorway, her white coat pristine and her smile wide. "I have your results." I tucked my phone away and followed her into her office, my heart pounding against my ribs. Dr. Mills sat behind her desk, her blonde hair pulled back into a neat bun. "I have wonderful news, Aria," she said, her blue eyes sparkling with genuine happiness. "You're pregnant!" My hand flew to my mouth. "Really? After trying for so long?" "Yes! About six weeks along. Everything looks perfect." She handed me a folder of papers. "Here's your prenatal vitamin schedule and first ultrasound appointment." Tears blurred my vision. After a full year of disappointment, of watching Alexander's face fall each time I shook my head, we finally had our miracle. "Thank you, doctor." My voice cracked with emotion. Dr. Mills squeezed my hand. "You've been so patient throughout this process. I'm truly happy for you and Alpha Reed." Alexander. I needed to tell him immediately. I practically floated out of the hospital, clutching the folder to my chest. Our pack would finally have its heir. My wolf, Ember, purred with contentment inside me, her presence warm and satisfied for the first time in months. "To the pack house, please," I told my driver, Robert, as I slid into the back seat of the black SUV. "Yes, Luna." He nodded respectfully in the rearview mirror. As the car pulled away from the hospital, my phone rang. Mother's face appeared on the screen, her warm amber eyes crinkling at the corners from her smile in the photo. "Hi, Mother," I answered, unable to keep the excitement from my voice. "Little wolf," she said, using my childhood nickname. Her voice sounded weaker today, I noticed with a pang. "How are you, sweetheart?" "I'm good. How are you feeling today?" I asked, concerned about the fatigue in her tone. "Oh, the same." She dismissed her condition like always. "I was thinking about you and Alexander. Have you discussed the formal mating ceremony yet?" I bit my l*p. The traditional ceremony should have happened shortly after our official mating, but Alexander's grandfather had fallen ill, and then there were always pack matters, business deals, territory negotiations... "We haven't set a date yet," I admitted. Mother's sigh was soft but filled with longing. "I would love to see you both participate in the ceremony before I..." She trailed off. "Don't talk like that," I said quickly. "You'll be fine." "Dear, we both know my condition isn't improving." Her pragmatism was gentle but firm. "It would mean everything to me to see my daughter properly celebrated as Luna before I pass." My throat tightened. "We're planning it, Mother. I promise." "Good," she said, sounding relieved. "I love you, dear." "I love you too." After hanging up, guilt gnawed at me. I hadn't exactly lied, but Alexander hadn't mentioned the ceremony in months. Now with the baby coming, though, surely he would want to make everything official. My phone rang again. Alexander's name flashed on the screen. "Alexander!" I answered eagerly. "I have amazing—" "Aria," he cut me off, his voice pitched low and professional. "I'll be working late tonight. Don't wait up." I frowned. "But I have something important to tell you." A feminine laugh sounded in the background. My spine stiffened. "Sorry, can't talk now. Important meeting. I'll see you tomorrow." He hung up before I could respond. I stared at my phone in disbelief, then reopened social media. Claire had posted again just two minutes ago: "Visiting the pack house" with a photo of a man's back by a large window. The broad shoulders and golden-brown hair were unmistakable. Alexander. "Robert," I said, my voice harder than before. "We're still going to the pack house." He hesitated, eyes meeting mine in the mirror. "Luna, perhaps we should—" "The pack house, Robert. Now." He nodded, concern evident in his expression as he turned back to the road. Twenty minutes later, we pulled up to the imposing glass and stone building that served as the Storm Pack's headquarters. My chest tightened as I stepped out of the car, noticing the massive LED display on the building's facade. Claire's face beamed down at me, her perfect smile announcing her as "Chief Healer of Storm Pack's New Healing Institution." When had that happened? Alexander hadn't mentioned any new appointment. I marched through the lobby, ignoring the curious glances from pack members. As Alpha's mate, my presence wasn't unusual, but my obvious agitation was. "Luna Summers," the receptionist greeted me nervously. "Alpha Reed is in a meeting—" "I know," I cut her off, striding toward the elevator. My heart hammered as the elevator climbed to the top floor. The pregnancy test results felt heavy in my hand. Would Alexander be happy? Would this change things between us? I pushed open his office door without knocking. Alexander stood by his desk, leaning over some documents. Claire sat comfortably on the leather couch, her legs tucked beneath her as if she belonged there. Both looked up at my entrance. "Aria," Alexander straightened, surprise flickering across his handsome face. "I thought I told you I was working late." "You did." I stepped inside, closing the door behind me. "But I needed to see you." Claire's smile was honey-sweet as she stood. "Aria! What a lovely surprise. Alexander and I were just discussing my new position." I ignored her, focusing on Alexander. "I need to speak with you. Alone." Alexander frowned. "Claire is our chief healer now. Whatever you need to say—" "Is private," I finished firmly. Claire placed a hand on Alexander's arm, the gesture casual yet possessive. "Don't worry, I understand mate things." She winked at me. "Though you should know, Aria, there's no need to be territorial. Alexander and I have been friends since we were pups." More than friends, I thought bitterly, but kept my expression neutral. Alexander stepped toward me, finally giving me his full attention. "What is it? You look... different." I felt a flutter of hope. Maybe he could sense the change in me already. I took a deep breath and reached for his hand. "Alexander, I—" A sharp crash interrupted me. Claire had knocked over her crystal water glass, sending shards scattering across the hardwood floor. "Oh!" she cried out, bending to pick up the pieces. "I'm so clumsy!" "Don't t***h that!" Alexander immediately released my hand and rushed to her side. "You'll cut yourself." Too late. A small gasp escaped Claire as blood welled from her index finger. The scent hit the air—sharp, tangy, distinctive. Alexander's protective instincts flared instantly. He crouched beside her, taking her hand in his with a gentleness that made my wolf whimper in confusion. "What were you thinking?" he scolded, but his tone was soft with concern. "Let me see." I stood frozen, watching as my mate tended to another woman with care that should have been reserved for me alone. The scene felt surreal, like I was watching from outside my body. Claire looked up at me through her lashes. "Sorry about that, Aria. Don't be jealous—Alexander's always been overprotective of me since we were little. It's just his nature." I managed a strained smile, my heart fracturing along invisible fault lines. "I should get this cleaned properly," Claire said, making no move to withdraw her hand from Alexander's. She stood, and he rose with her, still holding her injured finger. "You two continue your... show of affection. I'll see myself out." The way she said "show of affection" carried a subtle challenge, as if she knew perfectly well there had been none to interrupt. As the door closed behind her, I was left alone with Alexander and the lingering scent of Claire's expensive perfume mixed with her blood. The combined smells suddenly hit me differently—my wolf's senses heightened by pregnancy. Nausea rolled through me in a violent wave. I clapped a hand over my mouth and bolted for the private bathroom connected to Alexander's office. I barely made it to the toilet before emptying my stomach. Alexander appeared in the doorway, watching with a frown as I retched miserably. When I finally straightened, wiping my mouth with the back of my hand, his expression had shifted from confusion to dawning realization. "Aria, you..." Alexander looked at me with a frown, "You...are you pregnant?"

Chapter 2: Claire and I have nothing

Chapter 2: Claire and I have nothing (Aria's POV) My hand instinctively moved to cover my still-flat stomach. This wasn't how I'd planned to tell him. Before I could confirm his suspicion, Alexander's expression hardened. "You can't be pregnant, Aria." His words hit me like a physical blow. Not a question, but a statement—definitive and cold. "What?" I managed to croak out, my voice barely audible. "You can't be," he repeated, softer this time but no less certain. "It's just the medication making you sick again." A strange relief washed over me. He didn't know yet. My secret was still mine to reveal when the timing was right—not in the aftermath of finding him with Claire. "What medication?" I asked, genuinely confused. My wolf stirred uneasily inside me. Alexander's brow furrowed, concern reflecting in his amber eyes. "The fertility supplements you've been taking. You shouldn't overuse them—they're clearly making you ill." Another wave of nausea hit me, this time not from pregnancy but from his words. "How do you know about those?" I whispered, though I already suspected the answer. My heart pounded in my chest. He shifted uncomfortably. "Claire mentioned seeing them. She said they're prescribed for fertility issues." "Claire," I repeated, the name bitter on my tongue. "And what else did your... friend tell you about my medication?" The casual way he'd mentioned her name made my wolf bristle beneath my skin. Ember growled, sensing my distress. Alexander ran a hand through his golden-brown hair, clearly frustrated. "That they're commonly used by females struggling to conceive. She was concerned about side effects." "And you just believed her?" I asked, my voice rising slightly. "She's a healer, Aria. She knows these things." I stood straighter, finding strength in my growing anger. "And you believed her over me? I told you they were herbal vitamins." "Because you didn't want me to worry." His scent sharpened with frustration. "But I've noticed the pattern, Aria. Your frequent visits to Silvercrest, all the herbal remedies you consume." My wolf whimpered as the truth dawned on me. "Do you believe I'm infertile, Alexander?" His silence was answer enough. He couldn't even look me in the eye. "Is that what you think?" I pressed, needing to hear him say it. He sighed heavily. "The evidence suggests—" "The evidence?" I cut him off, my voice cracking. "What about trust? What about faith in your mate?" I felt my world cracking around me. Three years we'd been mated. Three years of trying for a child, of watching disappointment flash across his face each month. Three years of secretly visiting Dr. Mills to check on our fertility—only to discover the issue wasn't with me but with him. I'd protected his Alpha pride, endured Richard Reed's barely veiled contempt alone, and absorbed the pack's whispers about my apparent failure as Luna. And all this time, he thought I was the broken one. "Alexander, the medication isn't—" I began, but the office door swung open, cutting me off. Claire stood there, her perfect pout arranged in what might have passed for apology if her emerald eyes hadn't gleamed with satisfaction. "So sorry to interrupt again." Her melodic voice filled the tension-heavy room. "My car broke down in the pack parking area. I was hoping for a ride home?" Alexander's posture stiffened. "I'm in the middle of something with Aria." Claire's gaze flicked between us. "Of course, I understand." She hesitated, then added, "But everyone will be leaving soon, and it wouldn't look good for the new Chief Healer to be stranded, would it?" She turned those emerald eyes on me. "Aria wouldn't mind, right? We've been friends since we were pups, Alexander and I." For a split second, I questioned my suspicions. Was I being paranoid? Reading too much into innocent interactions? I smiled pleasantly. "Of course I don't mind." Relief flashed across Alexander's face so quickly I almost missed it. "Lucas can arrange transportation for you, Claire," I continued, voice sweet but firm. "My mate and I have important matters to discuss." Alexander hesitated, clearly torn. His scent betrayed his inner conflict—duty to me warring with whatever pull Claire still held over him. "Aria," he started, his tone pleading. My smile remained fixed, but my eyes hardened. "I insist." Claire seemed unbothered by my refusal. "It's just a quick ride, Aria. Fifteen minutes at most." She stepped closer to Alexander, her hand brushing his arm. "Besides, we need to finalize details about the healing center. My public image as Chief Healer is at stake." A low growl rumbled in my chest, barely contained. "And being seen with the Alpha who has a Luna wouldn't damage your image?" Claire's perfect features rearranged into surprise. "I assumed you knew I was Alexander's childhood sweetheart before your wolves recognized each other as mates." The revelation crashed over me like ice water. My wolf whimpered in confusion. "Claire," Alexander warned, his voice tight. She waved a delicate hand. "Ancient history, really. We were practically engaged before fate intervened. Then I found my darling David..." Her voice trailed off dramatically. "You were engaged?" I whispered, looking at Alexander. His face confirmed it before he could deny it. "Not officially," he muttered, not meeting my eyes. Claire laughed lightly. "Only because your father insisted on waiting until your twenty-first birthday. The ring was already chosen." Alexander silenced her with an angry growl. "Enough. Lucas will take you home." He gestured to his Beta, who had appeared silently in the doorway. Lucas nodded respectfully to me before guiding Claire out. "See you tomorrow, Alex," she called over her shoulder, the nickname landing like a slap across my face. The scent of her expensive perfume lingered long after she'd gone, clinging to the air like a poisonous cloud. I stood there, processing what I'd just learned. Alexander had never mentioned being practically engaged to Claire. The woman who now seemed determined to insert herself back into his life—into our life. "Was she telling the truth?" I asked quietly once we were alone. Alexander looked uncomfortable. "It was a long time ago." "That's not an answer," I shot back, my patience snapping. "Were you engaged to her?" "Informally," he admitted. "Our families had planned it since we were children." "And you never thought to mention this to me?" My voice rose with each word. "It wasn't important," he said defensively. "Not important?" I echoed in disbelief. "Your ex-fiancée is now working in our pack house, you're having private meetings with her, and it's not important?" As soon as the door closed completely, I pushed Alexander away, my hands trembling with suppressed emotion. "Do you still have feelings for her?" I demanded, voice barely steady. Alexander's amber eyes flashed. "No, of course not." "Don't lie to me," I whispered, heartbroken. "Claire is your childhood sweetheart. The one you were going to marry before our wolves recognized each other as mates." "Claire is my past, Aria. You are my mate." He reached for me, but I stepped back. "Am I?" I challenged. "Or am I just the woman fate forced on you?" My wolf cowered within me, sensing my pain. "If you still love her, I..." The words physically hurt to speak. "I can sever our mate bond if that's what you want." Alexander's eyes widened in shock. "What are you talking about?" "The procedure is dangerous," I continued, my voice growing hollow, "but it would free you to be with—" I stopped abruptly, catching a faint scent by the door. A shadow moved slightly in the crack beneath it. Someone was eavesdropping. Alexander followed my gaze and frowned. He stepped closer, his voice dropping to a whisper. "That's enough, Aria. There should be limits to fooling around." His tone was suddenly firm, authoritative. "Claire and I have nothing."

Chapter 3: Do You Want to Sever the Mate Bond?

Chapter 3: Do You Want to Sever the Mate Bond? (Aria's POV) "Nothing?" I repeated, my voice barely above a whisper. "You expect me to believe there's nothing between you and Claire?" Alexander's amber eyes hardened as he stepped toward me. "She means nothing to me, Aria. You are my Luna, my true mate." His words should have reassured me, but they rang hollow after what I'd just witnessed. "Then why did you rush to her side the moment she cut her finger?" I demanded, my wolf bristling beneath my skin. Alexander sighed, running his hand through his golden-brown hair. "It was instinct, nothing more. I've known her since childhood." "You never told me you were engaged to her," I said, unable to keep the hurt from my voice. He reached for me, pulling me into his embrace. I stiffened at first, surprised by this rare display of affection. "It was arranged by our families," he murmured against my hair. "But when my wolf recognized you as my true mate, none of that mattered anymore." I wanted to believe him. Three years ago, I would have melted into his arms, overjoyed at this tender moment. But now... "She severed her mate bond with Beta David," I said, pulling back to look into his eyes. I reached for my phone, opening Claire's social media. "Look." Alexander glanced at the screen, his expression unchanged. "And?" "And she's suddenly appearing everywhere in our lives," I pointed out. "Becoming Chief Healer, visiting you at work, calling you 'Alex'..." His amber eyes remained steady. "Claire and I are from the same pack. We grew up together. That's all there is to it." "She wants you back," I whispered. Alexander cupped my face in his hands. "It doesn't matter what she wants. We are mates, Aria. We will live our own lives." His words were perfect, but something in his tone made my stomach clench with doubt. He turned toward the door. "Lucas!" The Beta appeared instantly, as if he'd been waiting just outside. His hazel eyes darted between us before settling respectfully on Alexander. "Cancel my afternoon appointments," Alexander instructed. "And schedule an appointment with Dr. Nathan Lewis at Silvercrest for Aria's mother. The best treatment available." I blinked in surprise. My mother's condition had been deteriorating for months, but I hadn't expected Alexander to intervene personally. "Yes, Alpha," Lucas nodded, then disappeared as quietly as he'd arrived. Alexander turned back to me, his expression softening. "Your mother's health is important to you. It's important to me too." My wolf calmed slightly at this gesture of caring. Was I being paranoid about Claire? Was I letting my insecurities cloud my judgment? I was pregnant with Alexander's child. My mother was looking forward to our formal mating ceremony. Perhaps things weren't as broken as they seemed. "Alexander, I—" I began, but was interrupted by the shrill ring of his mobile phone. He glanced at the screen, his jaw tightening. Claire's name flashed brightly. My heart sank as he declined the call. But when it rang again immediately, something shifted in his expression. "What is it, Claire?" he answered, his tone annoyed. I turned away, not wanting him to see how much this hurt me. My hand instinctively moved to my belly, where our pup was growing. Ember whimpered within me, sensing my distress. "What?" Alexander's voice suddenly sharpened. "Are you hurt? Where are you?" I froze, my back still to him. The concern in his voice was unmistakable. "Stay there. I'm coming now," he promised, his wolf's protective instincts evident in his tone. He ended the call and strode toward me. "Claire's been in a car accident outside the pack house. I need to check on her." My throat tightened. "Of course you do." "I'll send Robert to take you home," he said hurriedly, already moving toward the door. "We'll reschedule the hospital visit for your mother." Just like that, he was choosing Claire over me—over my dying mother—again. "Alexander," I called after him, but he was already gone, the door closing behind him with a decisive click. I stood alone in his office, the weight of his abandonment crushing me. My hand pressed against my stomach as tears threatened to spill. "Your father doesn't know about you yet, little one," I whispered to my unborn pup. "And I'm not sure he would care if he did." Ember howled in pain within me, her anguish mirroring my own. What kind of future could I offer this child in a home where its father's heart belonged to another woman? I composed myself and headed downstairs, determined to see this "accident" for myself. Outside the pack house, I spotted Claire's sleek silver car with barely a scratch on its fender. The "accident" was nothing more than a minor bump against another parked vehicle. I watched as Alexander arrived, speaking briefly with Lucas, who seemed to be explaining something. Then Claire emerged from her car, her movements graceful despite her claims of injury. "Alexander!" she cried, stumbling slightly. "Thank goddess you came!" She clung to his arm, her emerald eyes seeking his immediate attention. Alexander leaned closer, examining her for injuries with obvious concern. The tears I'd been holding back finally broke free, streaming down my cheeks. I turned away, unable to watch any longer. "Are you okay?" A deep, unfamiliar voice startled me. I looked up to find a sleek black luxury SUV stopped beside me, the passenger window rolled down. A man with intense gray eyes studied me from the driver's seat. It took me a moment to recognize him—Dominic Blackwood, Alpha of the Shadow Pack and, ironically, Alexander's childhood friend. I'd seen him at a few pack gatherings but never spoken to him directly. "I'm fine," I lied, hastily wiping my tears. His powerful aura was unmistakable, even from inside the vehicle. He was easily the most intimidating werewolf I'd ever encountered—tall and broad-shouldered, with an air of absolute authority that made even other Alphas defer to him. "You don't look fine," he observed, his gaze moving past me to where Alexander and Claire stood. "Need a ride somewhere?" I shook my head. "No, thank you." "Sure? I could call your mate back for you," he suggested, a teasing note in his voice. "No!" The word burst from me with unexpected force. My wolf bristled at the mere suggestion. "No," I repeated more calmly. "I need to go to Silvercrest Hospital." He raised an eyebrow. "Then let me drive you. It's on my way." I hesitated, glancing back at Alexander. He hadn't even noticed I was still here. "Alright," I agreed reluctantly. Dominic leaned across to open the passenger door, and I slid into the luxurious interior, immediately enveloped in the scent of expensive leather and something distinctly wild—his wolf. As we pulled away from the pack house, I felt oddly relieved to be escaping, if only temporarily. "Want to talk about it?" Dominic asked after a few minutes of silence. "About what?" I kept my gaze fixed on the passing scenery. His chuckle was low and knowing. "About why the Luna of the Storm Pack is crying outside her own pack house while her mate comforts another female." I stiffened. "It's not what you think." "No?" His gray eyes flicked to me briefly before returning to the road. "I heard most of your argument with Alexander through the door of his office." My cheeks burned with embarrassment. "You were eavesdropping?" "I was waiting to speak with him," Dominic corrected. "But what I heard was... interesting." I said nothing, mortified that he had witnessed my humiliation. "Particularly the part about severing the mate bond," he continued casually. Then, with a knowing look and a mischievous smile that didn't quite reach his silver-gray eyes, he asked, "Want to sever the mate bond? I'll help you."

Chapter 4: A Shocking Revelation

Chapter 4: A Shocking Revelation (Aria's POV) I sat stiffly in the passenger seat of Dominic Blackwood's luxury SUV, acutely aware of his intimidating presence beside me. The silence between us felt charged with unspoken questions after his shocking offer. "You can't be serious," I finally said, turning to face him. "Severing a mate bond isn't something to joke about." Dominic's intense gray eyes flickered briefly from the road to me, his expression unreadable. "Who said I was joking?" he replied, his deep voice casual. "I have connections, resources. If Alexander's attention remains focused on Claire, you deserve freedom." I stared at him in disbelief. "You're Alexander's childhood friend." "And you're his mate who he just abandoned to comfort another woman," he countered smoothly. "Friendship has limits." The bluntness of his words stung because they were true. I turned away, watching the buildings blur past my window. "Why are you going to Silvercrest?" he asked, mercifully changing the subject. "My mother," I answered, my voice softening. "She's been battling a rare blood disease. I visit her every day." Dominic nodded, a flicker of genuine sympathy crossing his features. "The one that affects werewolf regeneration capabilities." I glanced at him, surprised by his knowledge. "Yes, exactly." "I've heard about her case," he said, his tone gentler than before. "Emily Price, right? Renowned healer before her illness." The fact that he knew my mother's maiden name caught me off guard. My wolf stirred curiously within me. "You've been busy recently," I remarked, desperate to shift the conversation away from my family troubles. "I heard you've officially taken the Alpha King position." Dominic was the Alpha of the Shadow pack, the most powerful pack in the Northern Territory. In our Northern Territory, there were more than 30 packs. The Alphas of each pack formed the Alpha Council to jointly manage the entire territory. At the same time, an Alpha King will be elected to lead the Alpha Council. Previously, because Dominic had always been unwilling to be the Alpha King, the position of Alpha King had been vacant until he suddenly decided to be the Alpha King not long ago. A half-smile played at the corner of his mouth. "News travels fast." "It was unexpected," I continued. "Everyone thought you'd continue running your security operations." "Life rarely goes as expected, doesn't it?" His words carried a weight that seemed directed at my situation rather than his own. I found myself relaxing slightly as we talked. There was something disarming about his direct manner. "You can call me Dominic, by the way," he said suddenly. "No need for formalities." "Dominic," I tested the name, feeling strangely comfortable with this familiarity. "I'm surprised we haven't spoken before." He chuckled, the sound unexpectedly warm. "We have, actually. At the winter solstice gathering last year. You once helped my grandmother." I frowned, trying and failing to recall the interaction. "I'm sorry, I don't remember." "You were preoccupied," he said with a shrug. "My grandmother had just announced plans for expanding Storm Pack territory." He continued as he pulled into the hospital parking lot. "She still mentions you. Said you had kind eyes." Something about his casual revelation made my cheeks warm. Before I could respond, he smoothly parked the car. "You don't have to come in," I said quickly, reaching for the door handle. "I know," he replied simply, already exiting the driver's side. I wasn't prepared for the curious stares that followed us through the hospital lobby. The Alpha King of the Shadow Pack escorting the Luna of the Storm Pack was bound to raise eyebrows. "Maybe this isn't a good idea," I whispered as we approached the elevator. Dominic seemed unconcerned by the attention. "Worried about gossip? I doubt it would reach Alexander while he's occupied with Claire." The painful reminder of what I'd just witnessed made my wolf whimper inside me. Dominic immediately sensed the change in my scent. "Sorry," he said, sounding genuinely apologetic. "That was unnecessary." The elevator doors opened, saving me from responding. We rode in silence to the third floor. Outside my mother's room, I hesitated. "She doesn't know about the problems between Alexander and me. I don't want to worry her." Dominic nodded. "I understand. I'll be discreet." Taking a deep breath, I pushed open the door. "Mother? I've brought someone to meet you." Emily Summers lay propped against pillows, her once-vibrant features now gaunt and pale. Despite her frailty, her amber eyes—so like my own—lit up when she saw me. "Little wolf," she smiled, then looked curiously at Dominic. Her eyes widened slightly in recognition of his powerful aura. Even weakened, my mother's healer instincts allowed her to sense the strength of his wolf. "Mother, this is Dominic Blackwood," I introduced, suddenly nervous. "Alpha of the Shadow Pack." To my surprise, Dominic approached her bedside with unexpected gentleness. "Mrs. Summers, it's an honor. Your reputation as a healer extends well beyond territory boundaries." My mother looked pleased but confused. "Thank you, Alpha Blackwood. It's kind of you to visit, though unexpected." "I offered your daughter a ride," he explained smoothly. "And I'd like to have my friend Dr. Nathan Lewis consult on your case, with your permission." I stared at him in shock. Nathan Lewis was one of the most sought-after specialists in werewolf medicine. "That's very generous," my mother said, her gaze shifting between us. "But surely Alexander has already arranged—" "Alexander is busy with preparations for our formal mating ceremony," I interrupted quickly. "He wants everything perfect for you." The lie tasted bitter on my tongue, but my mother's face brightened with joy. "Oh! He's finally agreed to the ceremony?" I nodded, unable to speak past the lump in my throat. "Thank you," I whispered to Dominic when my mother's attention shifted to adjusting her blankets. He shrugged as if offering to have a renowned specialist examine my mother was nothing extraordinary. "Nathan owes me a favor. Plus, he likes interesting cases." As if summoned by his name, a tall man with kind brown eyes and prematurely silver hair appeared in the doorway. "Speaking of the devil," Dominic murmured, a hint of amusement in his voice. "Dominic," the doctor greeted warmly before turning to me. "You must be Luna Summers. I'm Nathan Lewis." I shook his hand, overwhelmed by his unexpected appearance. "Thank you for coming, Doctor. I didn't expect—" "Dominic called. Said it was important," he explained, moving toward my mother. "Mrs. Summers, I've read about your case. With your permission, I'd like to review your treatment plan." As Dr. Lewis spoke quietly with my mother, I pulled Dominic aside. "Why are you doing this?" I asked, genuinely confused by his generosity. His silver-gray eyes met mine directly. "Perhaps I'm building goodwill for when you decide to take me up on my offer." Before I could respond, a news report on the small television in the corner of the room caught my attention. "...Chief Healer Claire Watson, who recently announced the dissolution of her mate bond with Beta David, appears to have found happiness with a new mate..." My blood turned to ice as I looked up at the screen. The image showed Claire smiling brilliantly beside a man whose face was blurred out for privacy. But I would recognize that stance anywhere—the proud set of those shoulders, the distinctive way he held himself. Alexander. The setting was unmistakable too—the large window in his office where I'd found them together just hours ago. The reporter continued cheerfully, "Sources close to the Storm Pack suggest this may be more than professional collaboration between the Alpha and the new Chief Healer..." I felt the room sway around me. Tears burned behind my eyes as the full weight of betrayal crashed down on me. All his reassurances, all his promises—lies. Dominic moved between me and the television, his broad shoulders blocking the painful images. His powerful Alpha presence radiated protective warmth that wrapped around me like a shield. Without thinking, I grabbed his wrist, desperate for something solid to anchor me as my world collapsed. "I'm sorry," I gasped, immediately releasing him, mortified at touching another Alpha so personally. "I didn't mean to—" Dominic seemed utterly unperturbed by my breach of protocol, his silver-gray eyes showing only concern. "It's alright," he said softly, his voice pitched low enough that only I could hear. "Breathe, Aria." Just then, a nurse burst into the room, her expression alarmed. "Luna Summers! Your mother—she saw the news report and collapsed!"

Chapter 5: Sleepless Night

Chapter 5: Sleepless Night (Aria's POV) My heart pounded violently in my chest as I raced toward my mother's healing room. The nurse's words echoed in my head, each syllable hammering against my skull like a physical blow. The sterile hospital corridor seemed endless. I could hear Dominic's footsteps behind me, but they felt distant, as if coming from another world. All I could focus on was reaching my mother. I skidded to a halt at the doorway. A large pool of crimson blood spread across the white tile floor. The metallic scent hit me hard, making my pregnant stomach lurch violently. My vision swam, dark spots dancing before my eyes. My knees buckled. Strong arms caught me before I hit the floor. "I've got you," Dominic's deep voice steadied me as he supported my weight. "Your mother will be alright." But the scene before me told a different story. Medical staff worked frantically around my mother's fragile form. Her skin was ghostly pale, almost translucent, highlighting the blue veins beneath. More blood stained her hospital gown, stark evidence of what had happened. "She saw the news report and became agitated," a nurse explained, glancing nervously between me and Dominic. "The stress triggered a severe episode. She's coughed up a significant amount of blood." Dr. Nathan Lewis appeared, his silver hair disheveled, his usually calm demeanor now tense with urgency. "We need to get her into surgery immediately," he said, his voice clipped and professional. "Her condition is deteriorating rapidly." I watched helplessly as they wheeled my mother away, her small form dwarfed by the hospital bed. The rare werewolf blood disease had already weakened her significantly, and now this—a crisis triggered by the public scandal involving Alexander and Claire. My fingers trembled as I pulled out my phone. Alexander needed to know what had happened. He should be here, by my side, not with Claire. The call connected after three rings, but it wasn't Alexander who answered. "Hello?" Claire's melodic voice sent a chill down my spine. "Claire?" I barely recognized my own voice, strained and hollow. "Why are you answering Alexander's phone?" "Oh, Aria." Her tone dripped with false sympathy. "Alexander stepped out to find some rare herbs that might help with healing. He left his phone with me so I wouldn't miss any important calls." The casual way she explained her access to my mate's personal phone felt like another betrayal. Tears welled in my eyes, blurring my vision. "My mother is in emergency surgery," I managed to say, my voice cracking. "She saw the news about you and Alexander." There was a pause before Claire responded, her voice sickeningly sweet. "I'm so sorry to hear that. I'll let Alexander know as soon as he returns." The call ended before I could say anything more. I stood frozen, phone still pressed to my ear, tears streaming silently down my cheeks. "Aria," Dominic's voice pulled me back to reality. His gray eyes studied me with surprising gentleness. "Come sit down before you collapse." He guided me to a nearby waiting area, his hand steady at my elbow. I was too numb to protest the familiar contact from another Alpha. My wolf, Ember, whimpered within me, seeking comfort rather than challenging his presence. "Claire answered his phone," I whispered, staring blankly at the wall. "They're together." Dominic didn't respond immediately. When he did, his voice was carefully neutral. "Focus on your mother now. The rest can wait." He stayed with me through that agonizing hour of waiting. He didn't fill the silence with empty reassurances or press me for details about my relationship with Alexander. His quiet presence was oddly comforting. Finally, Dr. Lewis appeared, still in his surgical gown but looking less frantic than before. "She's stable," he announced, removing his surgical cap. "We've managed to stop the bleeding and strengthen her condition temporarily, but she's very weak, Aria." Relief flooded through me so intensely that fresh tears sprang to my eyes. "Can I see her?" "Briefly," he nodded. "She's sleeping and needs absolute rest." I turned to Dominic, suddenly unsure what to say. He seemed to understand without words. "Go," he said simply. "I'll wait." My mother looked impossibly frail lying in the hospital bed, surrounded by monitoring equipment. Her breathing was shallow but steady, her face peaceful in medicated sleep. I carefully took her hand, mindful of the IV lines. "I'm here, Mother," I whispered, stroking her gray-streaked hair. "I'm so sorry this happened." Sitting beside her bed, the full weight of my situation crashed down on me. Alexander, my own mate, had publicly humiliated me. His actions had nearly cost my mother her life. Our bond, once so precious to me, now felt like chains binding me to endless pain. Tomorrow, I would confront him. If he couldn't provide a satisfactory explanation, I would consider severing our mate bond—regardless of the risks involved. The thought of ending our three-year mating brought a fresh wave of tears. I had truly loved Alexander, had believed our wolves' recognition of each other was destiny's blessing. Now I wondered if it had been a cruel joke instead. Had Alexander ever truly gotten over Claire? I remembered how his eyes would sometimes drift when she entered a room, how he would mention her accomplishments with poorly disguised pride. Claire's severing of her mate bond with Beta David removed the last obstacle between them. If I didn't confront Alexander now, the outcome might eventually be the same—a severed mate bond, but on his terms rather than mine. Lost in these painful thoughts, I barely noticed when the door opened behind me. "Little sister?" I turned to find my brother James standing there, his tall frame filling the doorway. His amber eyes—so like my own—darkened with concern as he took in my tear-stained face and our mother's unconscious form. "James," I managed, before breaking down completely. He crossed the room in two strides, pulling me into a fierce hug. The familiar scent of forest and leather that always clung to him brought momentary comfort. "What happened?" he demanded, his voice tight with controlled fury. Between sobs, I explained about the news report showing Alexander with Claire, how Mother had seen it and collapsed. James's jaw clenched, a muscle ticking in his cheek. "I'll kill him." "No," I grabbed his arm. "That won't help anything." My brother had never approved of my mating with Alexander. He'd sensed something I'd been too blinded by love to see—Alexander's divided heart. "Bring him here tomorrow," James said firmly. "He needs to clear up this misunderstanding, reassure Mother that the news report was nothing." I nodded, too exhausted to argue. "I will." James stayed a while longer, his protective presence soothing my frayed nerves. When a nurse came to inform us visiting hours were ending, he kissed my forehead. "Call me if anything changes," he said. "I'm staying nearby." Leaving the ward, I was startled to find Dominic still sitting in the waiting area, his powerful frame somehow making the hospital chair look small. "You stayed," I said stupidly. He stood, stretching subtly. "I said I would." Something about his simple reliability made my throat tighten with emotion. "Can I offer you a ride home?" he asked, his tone carefully neutral. Too drained to consider the implications, I nodded. Twenty minutes later, we pulled into the circular driveway of the Reed family's sprawling residence in Storm Pack territory. I hadn't been thinking clearly when I directed him here instead of the pack house. This was Alexander's family home, where we maintained a wing for ourselves despite having official quarters at the pack house. Elizabeth Reed, my mother-in-law, opened the door before we even reached it. Her kind eyes widened in surprise at the sight of Dominic Blackwood escorting me home. "Alpha King," she said uncertainly, glancing between us. "This is unexpected." Dominic inclined his head respectfully. "Mrs. Reed. I went to the pack house looking for Alexander but couldn't find him. I met Aria and offered her a ride home." Elizabeth's brow creased with worry. "Alexander isn't with you, Aria? I thought you were both visiting your mother." The painful reminder that Alexander hadn't been there when I needed him most made me look away, unable to meet her concerned gaze. "Please, come in," Elizabeth said after an awkward pause. "I was just about to serve lunch. You'll join us, Alpha King?" I expected him to politely decline. These informal meals with Alexander's family had become rare since our mating—I couldn't imagine Dominic, the intimidating Alpha King, would have any interest. "I'd be delighted," Dominic replied, surprising me. "I've missed your cooking, Elizabeth." My mother-in-law's face brightened at the unexpected compliment. As we followed her inside, a car pulled into the driveway behind us. Elizabeth looked past us, initial joy spreading across her features as she recognized Alexander's vehicle. That joy transformed into shock as the passenger door opened, and someone else stepped out of the vehicle.

Chapter 6: Shifting the Blame (Aria's POV)

Chapter 6: Shifting the Blame (Aria's POV) My breath caught in my throat as I watched Claire step out of Alexander's car. I couldn't believe she had the audacity to come here, to our family home, after everything that had happened. She emerged with practiced grace, her auburn hair catching the afternoon sunlight. As always, she wore pristine white clothing that emphasized her healer status and supposed purity. The sight made my stomach turn. Alexander followed behind her, carrying several packages. His face tensed when he spotted Dominic standing beside me, and his amber eyes narrowed dangerously. "Elizabeth!" Claire exclaimed with theatrical warmth, approaching my mother-in-law with outstretched arms. "It's been too long!" Elizabeth's smile remained fixed in place, but I could see the strain in her eyes. "Claire. What a surprise." Claire presented a beautifully wrapped package to her. "A small gift. That special tea blend you've always loved from the eastern territory." Elizabeth accepted it with cold politeness. "How thoughtful." Claire then turned to me, another package in her manicured hands. "And for you, Aria. Some rare healing herbs to help with your... fertility issues." The deliberate emphasis on my supposed i*********y made my wolf bristle violently beneath my skin. I glanced at the herbs Alexander carried - clearly purchased during their outing together while I'd been dealing with my mother's medical emergency. "No, thank you," I said firmly, not bothering to mask my hostility. "I don't accept gifts from women who answer my mate's phone." Claire's emerald eyes widened in feigned hurt. "I was merely helping Alexander while he selected these herbs. For you, of course." Her perfect smile couldn't hide the venom beneath her words. My wolf sensed the deception and growled softly within me. The pregnancy had made me more attuned to threats, and every instinct in my body screamed that Claire was dangerous. "Aria!" Richard Reed's harsh voice cut through the tense silence. Alexander's father scowled at me from the doorway. "Is this how the Luna of Storm Pack treats guests?" I straightened my spine, refusing to be cowed. "Does Storm Pack typically entertain uninvited guests in the family home rather than the pack house?" Richard's face darkened with anger. "Claire Watson is always welcome in this house. She's practically family." "Unlike some," he added under his breath, though loud enough for my enhanced hearing to catch. The words stung more than I wanted to admit. After three years, I was still an outsider to him. "Richard," Elizabeth's sharp tone cut through his tirade. Her glare silenced him immediately. Richard's demeanor changed instantly. "Claire, my dear. How wonderful to see you!" His voice dripped with warmth he never showed me. "Tell me about your work as our new Chief Healer." The contrast in how he treated us was stark and painful. Claire received the respect I'd spent years trying to earn. "Yes, do tell," Dominic's deep voice rumbled beside me, his silver-gray eyes analyzing the dynamics at play. "It's fascinating how quickly you secured such an important position after severing your mate bond." An awkward silence followed his pointed remark. Claire's smile faltered for just a second before she recovered. "Timing and opportunity," she replied smoothly. "The Pack needed leadership in healing, and I was qualified." "Aria," Richard commanded, ignoring Dominic's comment. "Prepare the traditional welcome tea for our guests." The traditional welcome tea was a ritual reserved for honored pack visitors. That Richard would request it for Claire while my mother lay critically ill in the hospital was the final insult. "I'll have the pack house staff prepare it," I responded coldly, my hands trembling slightly with anger. Richard's face flushed with fury at my defiance. "As Luna, you should—" "Perhaps Alexander should prepare it," Dominic suggested smoothly, cutting off Richard's tirade. "I've heard he's quite discerning about herbal blends." Alexander's jaw tightened at Dominic's interference. The tension between the two Alphas crackled in the air. "You seem very protective of Aria, Alpha Blackwood," Claire observed, her tone insinuating something inappropriate. "How... interesting." Alexander growled softly, the sound barely audible but unmistakably possessive. The hypocrisy made my blood boil. He had no right to act territorial after abandoning me for Claire. "Dominic was kind enough to drive me home after visiting my mother in the hospital," I explained pointedly. "Since my mate was unavailable." My emphasis on the word "mate" was deliberate, a reminder to everyone of Alexander's obligations—obligations he had neglected. Alexander's eyes met mine briefly, his expression unreadable. "Let's continue this inside," he said, dismissing Dominic's suggestion about the tea. "I'm sure everyone would be more comfortable." Inside the main sitting area, the tension remained palpable. Elizabeth arranged for refreshments while Richard engaged Claire in animated conversation, hanging on her every word as she described her plans for the pack's healing center. "Your ideas are revolutionary," Richard praised her, his eyes shining with admiration. "The Storm Pack will lead in healing innovations under your guidance." I bit my tongue to keep from pointing out that many of these "revolutionary" ideas had originated from my mother's work. Alexander turned his attention to Dominic. "I'm curious about your recent career moves, old friend. You've always avoided Alpha King responsibilities in favor of your security operations. What changed?" Dominic leaned back, his powerful aura filling the space. "Priorities evolve." "That's not an answer," Alexander pressed, his tone hardening. "Perhaps I saw an opportunity to implement changes I've long advocated for," Dominic replied vaguely. His silver-gray eyes flickered briefly to me before returning to Alexander. "Creating a more unified alliance among Northern packs through diplomacy rather than dominance has always been my goal." The two Alphas continued their thinly veiled verbal sparring, their dominant energies making the air feel heavy. My wolf whimpered within me, increasingly uncomfortable with the heightened tension. The pregnancy made me more sensitive to these power displays. I placed a protective hand over my still-flat stomach, hoping no one would notice the gesture. My secret was still mine alone. I shifted in my seat, trying to find a comfortable position. Claire noticed my discomfort and slid closer on the sofa. "Aria," she whispered, her voice syrupy sweet as she nudged me with surprising force. "You should refill Dominic's tea. That's what a proper Luna would do." The unexpected push nearly knocked me off balance. I caught myself on the armrest, anger flaring hot and bright. My wolf's protective instincts surged violently, concerned for our unborn pup. "What do you think you're doing?" I hissed, loud enough for others to hear. The conversation halted. All eyes turned toward us. Claire's emerald eyes widened in practiced innocence. "I was just reminding you of your duties as Luna. There's no need to overreact." "Overreact?" I echoed incredulously, my voice rising despite my efforts to remain calm. "You're creating a scene, dear," Claire whispered, her voice carrying just enough to ensure everyone heard. "How embarrassing for Alexander, especially in front of another Alpha." She masterfully twisted the situation, portraying herself as the victim of my supposed jealousy while making me appear unstable and unreasonable. "Aria, control yourself," Richard snapped, predictably taking Claire's side. I felt trapped in a web of manipulation, unable to defend myself without appearing more unhinged. "I understand you might feel threatened by my presence," Claire continued with false concern, reaching out to pat my hand. I pulled away immediately. "But I'm merely his childhood friend, nothing more. Your insecurities are showing, dear." The calculated manipulation in her words made my blood boil. She was deliberately shifting blame onto me, making it appear as if I were the problem rather than her blatant interference in my relationship. I caught Dominic watching the exchange with narrowed eyes, clearly seeing through Claire's performance. I sneered at her, unable to contain my contempt any longer. "A childhood friend? Is that what they call someone who causes a public scandal with a mated Alpha these days?"

Chapter 7: His Guilt

Chapter 7: His Guilt (Aria's POV) "Scandal?" Elizabeth's voice cut through the room like a knife. Her eyes darted between Alexander and Claire, then settled on me with concerned intensity. "What scandal is this?" Alexander stepped forward, his posture stiff and defensive. "It's nothing, Mother. Just rumors." "Rumors with photographic evidence," I countered, my voice steadier than I felt. Claire laughed lightly, the sound like broken glass to my ears. "People will talk about nothing. I assure you, Elizabeth, there's nothing inappropriate between Alexander and me." Elizabeth's gaze hardened as she pulled out her tablet from a nearby drawer. After a few quick taps, she turned the screen toward us. "Nothing?" she questioned, displaying the news article with photos of Alexander and Claire standing intimately close by his office window. "This doesn't look like nothing to me." Alexander's jaw tightened. "It's being taken out of context." "And this?" Elizabeth swiped to another image showing Claire clinging to Alexander's arm outside the pack house. "Is this also out of context?" Claire's perfect smile faltered for just a moment. I noticed Richard shifting uncomfortably in his chair. Elizabeth zoomed in on one particular photo, her finger pointing to a figure in the background. "That's Lucas, isn't it? Your Beta was present during these... business meetings?" Alexander remained silent, caught in his mother's trap. Lucas Bell's presence in the photos confirmed these weren't isolated incidents or misinterpreted moments. Elizabeth set down the tablet and turned to Claire, her usually gentle demeanor transformed by maternal protectiveness. "Listen carefully," she said, each word deliberate and sharp. "Whatever game you're playing ends now. Alexander and Aria will have their formal mating ceremony soon, with the blessing of both families." Claire's emerald eyes flickered with something dangerous. "Elizabeth, you misunderstand. Alexander and I are merely—" "Childhood friends. Yes, I've heard," Elizabeth cut her off coldly. "Friends don't cause scandals that endanger their friend's mother-in-law's health." Richard finally found his voice. "Elizabeth, you're overreacting. Claire has every right to—" "To what?" Elizabeth challenged, rounding on her husband. "To insert herself between a mated pair? To undermine our son's Luna? To bring shame to our pack's reputation?" The room fell silent. Even Richard seemed to have no response. Claire stood gracefully, smoothing her pristine white dress. "I think it's best if I leave." Her voice was controlled, but I could sense her anger beneath the practiced calm. "I never meant to cause any trouble." Alexander stepped forward. "I'll drive you—" "No," Elizabeth and I said simultaneously. Claire's perfect mask slipped for just a second, revealing raw fury before she composed herself. "Of course," she murmured. "I can call for a car." She looked at me with false sympathy. "I truly hope your mother recovers soon, Aria." The mention of my mother from her l**s made my wolf growl beneath my skin. I said nothing as she glided out, Richard following to e****t her. Dominic, who had been silently observing the entire exchange, finally spoke. "So there's to be a formal mating ceremony? Congratulations are in order, then." His tone was light, but his silver-gray eyes studied Alexander intensely. Alexander glared at him. "Yes. Soon." "Wonderful news," Dominic continued smoothly. "I'll be sure to send an appropriately generous gift. The Shadow Pack values strong alliances." The underlying message wasn't lost on anyone. Dominic was reminding Alexander of his position as Alpha of storm pack and the political implications of his personal scandals. Elizabeth smiled tightly. "Shall we have dinner? The food is getting cold." Dinner was a tense affair filled with stilted conversation. Richard returned halfway through, his expression sour. Dominic maintained perfect courtesy, discussing territory matters with calculated ease that somehow made Alexander grow increasingly agitated. My thoughts kept drifting to my mother lying in a hospital bed because of this situation, and to the tiny life growing inside me that no one yet knew about. After the meal, I excused myself, claiming exhaustion. It wasn't a lie – the pregnancy and emotional turmoil had drained me completely. "I should be going as well," Dominic announced, rising from his seat. "Elizabeth, exceptional meal as always." Alexander walked him to the door while I headed upstairs to our private quarters. I barely had the energy to change into my nightgown before collapsing onto the bed. One hand rested protectively over my belly where our unborn pup was growing. "What a day you've had, little one," I whispered, tears burning behind my closed eyelids. "I'm sorry for all this stress." I must have fallen asleep because I woke to the sensation of someone climbing into bed beside me. Alexander's familiar scent enveloped me as he pulled me into his arms. "You're awake," he murmured, his breath warm against my n**k. I stiffened in his embrace. "Yes." His arms tightened around me. "Why was Dominic Blackwood bringing you home?" Of course that would be his first concern. Not my mother's health or my emotional state. "He drove me home from the hospital," I replied flatly. "Where my mother is fighting for her life after seeing your scandal with Claire." Alexander sat up abruptly. "What? Your mother's in the hospital?" I turned to face him, noting the genuine shock in his amber eyes. "Yes. She saw the news report about you and Claire. It caused a severe episode. She coughed up blood, Alexander. They had to perform emergency surgery." Horror washed over his features. "Why didn't you call me?" "I did," I replied coldly. "Claire answered your phone." Alexander ran his hands through his hair, a gesture of genuine distress. "We need to go to the hospital. I need to explain to your mother that there's nothing between Claire and me." "Is that true?" I challenged, sitting up to face him directly. "Because your actions suggest otherwise. The way you rushed to her side when she broke that glass, how you left me at the pack house to comfort her after a minor fender bender..." Alexander's expression darkened. "It's complicated, Aria." "Uncomplicate it," I demanded, my patience finally snapping. "Tell me the truth. What is Claire to you now?" He was silent for a long moment, then reached for his phone. After a few taps, he handed it to me. "Read this," he said quietly. It was a news article from two years ago. The headline read: "PACK ENFORCER CRITICALLY INJURED SAVING ALPHA'S LIFE." The article detailed how Beta David Watson had thrown himself between Alexander and a rogue wolf during a territorial dispute, suffering catastrophic injuries to his spine and brain that left him permanently disabled. "David is Claire's mate," Alexander said, his voice hollow with guilt. "Or was, until she severed the bond." The pieces started falling into place. "That's why she dissolved their mate bond? Because he's disabled?" Alexander nodded grimly. "He requires constant care. The severity of his condition means he can no longer fulfill his duties as her mate. The strain was destroying Claire." I felt a complex mixture of emotions – sympathy for David, disgust at Claire for abandoning her injured mate, and growing unease about Alexander's involvement. "Why didn't you ever tell me this?" I asked softly. Alexander's shoulders sagged. "I carry the guilt of his condition every day. If he hadn't protected me..." "That doesn't explain your behavior with Claire," I pointed out. Alexander met my eyes, pain evident in his gaze. "When Claire first learned the extent of David's injuries, she broke down. She... tried to take her own life with a broken glass." Understanding dawned on me. His extreme reaction to Claire's cut finger earlier wasn't romantic concern – it was traumatic memory. "That's why you reacted so strongly when she cut herself today," I whispered. He nodded. "I should have explained sooner. I know how it must have looked." I processed this new information slowly. While it explained some things, other questions remained. "I understand your guilt, Alexander. But why all the private meetings? The special treatment? The way your father favors her?" Alexander sighed heavily. "Claire lost everything because David saved me. My father feels we owe her a position of honor in the pack. The Chief Healer role was his idea." I thought about Claire's calculated manipulations, how she'd played on Alexander's guilt to insert herself into our lives. "Does she use this guilt to control you?" I asked directly. Alexander frowned. "What do you mean?" "Alexander, she's manipulating you," I said softly. "Using your guilt to maintain her hold on you. I understand feeling responsible for David's condition, but her behavior goes beyond seeking support." Alexander seemed to consider my words carefully. "I never looked at it that way." I took his hand, feeling a faint glimmer of hope that we might find understanding. "I need you to be honest with me now. Given everything – my mother's condition, our circumstances, and Claire's behavior – do you think it's wise to continue this close association with her?" Alexander squeezed my hand. "I hear your concerns, Aria. I'll be more careful about boundaries with Claire." His words were right, but something in his tone left me uneasy. It wasn't a promise to distance himself from her, only to be more "careful." I nodded, too exhausted to push further tonight. Despite his explanation, something still felt unresolved between us.

Chapter 8: Like Falling into an Ice Cave

Chapter 8: Like Falling into an Ice Cave (Aria's POV) The morning light filtered through the hospital windows as Alexander and I made our way down the sterile corridor. Despite the tension between us, I felt a glimmer of hope. After our talk last night, I'd decided to tell him about my pregnancy today. "I hope your mother's condition has improved," Alexander said, breaking the silence between us. "The doctor said she was stable when I called this morning," I replied, my hand unconsciously moving to my still-flat stomach. We reached my mother's room, but when I pushed open the door, I froze. The bed was empty, sheets neatly folded. My heart plummeted. "Where is she?" I gasped, panic rising in my throat. Alexander's hand found my shoulder, steadying me. "Breathe, Aria. Let's ask someone." A nurse appeared in the doorway, clipboard in hand. "Are you looking for Emily Summers?" "Yes," I said quickly. "Where is she?" "She was transferred to the VIP ward early this morning," the nurse explained with a smile. "Much more comfortable accommodations." Relief washed over me. I turned to Alexander, gratitude warming my chest. "You arranged this?" Alexander's amber eyes met mine briefly yet he didn't answer my question directly. "Let's go see her." As we walked toward the VIP section, my heart lightened. This thoughtful gesture showed me the Alexander I'd fallen in love with still existed beneath the complications with Claire. "Thank you," I said softly. "This means a lot to me." He squeezed my hand in response, and I decided that after seeing my mother, I would tell him about our pup. Despite everything, he deserved to know he was going to be a father. As we approached the VIP ward, familiar voices carried down the hallway. I recognized my brother James's deep tone first. "I really appreciate what you've done, Dominic. The transfer to this ward... it's beyond what I expected." I slowed my steps, confused. Dominic was here? "It was no trouble," came Dominic's distinctive voice. "Your mother deserves the best care available." Alexander tensed beside me, his jaw tightening as we rounded the corner to find my brother and Dominic Blackwood standing outside my mother's new room. "Dominic arranged the transfer?" I asked, looking between the three men. "Not you, Alexander?" James's eyes narrowed as he spotted Alexander. "So you finally decided to show up." "James," I warned quietly. My brother had never hidden his dislike for Alexander, but now wasn't the time for confrontation. "Your mother is awake," James said to me, deliberately ignoring Alexander. "She's been asking for you." I nodded, trying to process the revelation that it was Dominic, not Alexander, who had helped my mother. Alexander had taken credit for another's kindness. The VIP room was spacious and bright, with large windows overlooking the hospital gardens. My mother looked small against the plush pillows, but her eyes brightened when she saw us. "Alexander," she said, her voice weak but welcoming. "I'm glad you've come." Alexander approached her bedside with practiced charm. "Mrs. Summers, I'm deeply sorry about yesterday's misunderstanding. It seems the media created quite a stir." I watched as he smoothly explained away the situation with Claire, painting it as nothing more than pack business misconstrued by gossip-hungry reporters. His words flowed like honey, reassuring and sweet. "Claire is the pack's Chief Healer," he explained. "Our meetings are strictly professional, focused on improving medical care for all pack members." My mother's expression relaxed with each word. She wanted to believe him, wanted to know her daughter's mating was secure. "I was worried," she admitted. "The news made it seem like..." "Media exaggeration," Alexander assured her. "Nothing more." James snorted softly from the corner of the room, earning a sharp look from me. Now wasn't the time. Alexander turned as Dominic entered, his posture stiffening. "I'm surprised to see you here, Dominic. Visiting patients isn't usually your style." Dominic's silver-gray eyes remained unruffled by the challenge. "I had a pack member on this floor. When I heard about Mrs. Summers' situation, I offered assistance with the room transfer." "How convenient," Alexander replied, the edge in his voice unmistakable. I looked between them, the realization sinking in that Alexander had deliberately misled me. "You told me you arranged this," I said quietly. Alexander's jaw tightened. "I spoke with Dominic about it." "But you didn't actually do anything," I clarified, keeping my voice low to avoid upsetting my mother. "You let me believe you had." The silence that followed confirmed my suspicion. I turned to Dominic, awkwardness washing over me. "Thank you for helping my mother," I said sincerely. Dominic's expression softened slightly. "I didn't do it for him, Aria. I did it for you." The tension in the room thickened. Alexander straightened, his Alpha presence filling the space. "Perhaps we should discuss this outside," he suggested to Dominic, his tone leaving no room for argument. Dominic inclined his head in agreement. "By all means." Once they'd left, I busied myself with preparing fruit for my mother, trying to ignore the confusing emotions swirling through me. "They're gone now," my mother said softly. "You can stop pretending you're fine." I looked up, meeting her knowing gaze. Even weakened by illness, she could still read me perfectly. "I'm just tired," I lied. She patted the edge of her bed, inviting me to sit. "I'm relieved about Alexander and Claire. I was so worried when I saw that news report." Guilt twisted in my stomach. She believed Alexander's smooth explanation, and I couldn't bring myself to shatter that peace. "I know how much you were looking forward to the formal mating ceremony," she continued, her thin fingers finding mine. "It will be beautiful, I'm sure." "Yes," I agreed, forcing a smile. Her amber eyes—so like my own—studied me carefully. "There's something different about you, little wolf. I can sense it." My hand unconsciously moved to my stomach. I hadn't planned to tell anyone before Alexander, but the words rose to my l**s unbidden. "I'm pregnant, Mother." Her gasp of joy was immediate, her frail arms reaching for me. "A pup! Oh, Aria!" James, who had been silently watching from the corner, was by my side in an instant. "You're sure?" he asked, his face breaking into a rare smile. I nodded, tears gathering in my eyes. "About six weeks along. I found out the day before yesterday." "Alexander doesn't know yet?" my mother asked, her eyes shining. "No," I admitted. "I haven't found the right moment." "Tell him now," she urged, squeezing my hand. "This joyous news will strengthen your bond. Nothing brings a mated pair closer than a pup on the way." James nodded in agreement. "Go find him. This changes everything." Their enthusiasm was infectious. Perhaps they were right—a baby might be exactly what Alexander and I needed to find our way back to each other. With renewed hope, I hugged my mother gently. "I'll tell him right away," I promised. I left the room, my heart lighter than it had been in months. The joy of sharing my pregnancy with my family had eased some of my fears. Now I just needed to find Alexander and Dominic. I followed the sound of their voices to a quiet alcove at the end of the hallway. I was about to step forward when Dominic's words stopped me cold. "Did Claire sever her mate bond because of you?" he asked bluntly. I froze, my breath catching in my throat. There was a brief silence before Alexander's response came, clear and damning. "Yes." I stood motionless, unable to process what I'd just heard. The world around me seemed to blur, the hospital sounds fading to a distant hum. After all his explanations, all his reassurances about Claire being nothing more than a childhood friend, the truth emerged. Claire had severed her mate bond for Alexander.
